5-21-21 grandparent scam surfaces in dodge county

The Dodge County Sheriff is warning residents to beware of the so-called grandparent scam.  Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the scam has been around for more than a decade and seems to be ramping up in the area again.  Schmidt says the telephone caller often imposters the grandchild and acts distraught leading the grandparent to believe they are truly talking to their grandchild.  The grandparent is instructed to send money or gift cards or wire the money, not to tell the grandchild’s parents, taking advantage of the grandparent’s emotions and concern for their  family.  Schmidt  says these scammers have made $10,000 in a day and some residents are out hundreds of thousands of dollars.   Schmidt says if you receive a call like this hang up.
