10-6-21 fdl high school students involved in fight face criminal charges

Students who participated in a fight Tuesday at Fond du Lac High School have been suspended, may be expelled, and have been referred for criminal charges.  Superintendent Dr. Jeff Fleig says the fight broke out shortly after 9:30am Tuesday in front of the High School Main Office.   Dr. Fleig says about a dozen staff tried to break up the fight.   Dr. Fleig says nine students have been suspended and  were arrested facing possible criminal charges.  “I saw video clips that we have on our cameras and in my 28 years of education I’ve never seen anything like it,”  Dr. Fleig told WFDL news.   One student involved in the fight was treated at the scene for a bloody lip.  No staff was injured and nobody was transported to the hospital.    Dr. Fleig says students were held in the classrooms starting at 9:45am while staff and police  addressed the altercation between the students that began due to ongoing conflicts that started outside school.   Dr. Fleig says the hold was gradually lifted starting at 11:15am to allow students to eat lunch.   He says at 12:40pm students were sent to their fourth hour class.  “Overwhelmingly, to the point of where I would say 99 percent of our students come to school each day, want to learn, enjoy high school, enjoy the learning environment.  We have to ensure they are able to do that.”   Dr. Fleig says there will be a stepped up police presence at the school  for the foreseeable future.  “We’re going to have an increased presence of at least four officers in the building with additional officers patrolling in the neighborhood around the school.”  Principal Matt Steinbarth says the first priority is the safety and well-being of students and staff.
