12-9-21 malone man makes initial appearance on voter fraud charge

A Malone man charged in Fond du Lac County with voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election has made his initial court appearance.  Anthony Van Egtern appeared in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court Tuesday on one count of election fraud.  He is free on a $1,000 signature bond.   A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 18.  Like the first person charged in Fond du Lac County earlier this year Van Egtern is a convicted felon  who was still on probation when he voted.  According to a criminal complaint Van Egtern voted in the 2020 presidential election at the Taycheeda Town Hall.  His probation was scheduled to end December 11.   Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, who is running as a Republican for state attorney general says these prosecutions are not indicative that the election was stolen but says  “elections are the cornerstone of our democracy and the integrity of our electoral process must be protected at every turn.”    If convicted, Van Egtern faces up to 3 years and 6 months in prison and a  $10,000 fine.
